Since moving to Sooke on Vancouver Island a couple years , Port Renfrew quickly became one of our (if not our most) very favourite places.  A quiet, rugged, wild, and mysterious pocket of coast line takes the breath away of every visitor. Winter storms are dramatic, wildlife is abundant, and the landscape is humbling. Our first trip there was a cold and grey November day as huge green waves crashed against layers of black angular lava rock. Like liquid glass colliding against a book of razors. We could only stand there and stare, mouths agape. Just around a bend from there, a short hike through twisted cedars, sitkas and firs, is a smooth refuge of flat beach, sheltered from ocean winds and pock marked by tide pools that teem with sea life.  One doesn't need to wonder why Holly and Alessandro, geologists, would choose this on all places to host their family for their intimate wedding. 

Holly and Ale got ready for their day at the Wild Renfrew cabins, overlooking the Port of San Juan, and mountains filled with new and ancient growth forests.  As a small group, their friends and family walked down to Botany Bay and gathered closely for their ceremony officiated by an inviting and humourous  Port Renfrew local Reet Buckler.  Eagles soared overhead, sea lions played in the kelp bed, and waves crashed rhythmically on the rocks.  After the ceremony and champagne, we stole away with Holly and Ale to explore the coast more for some adventurous portraits.

New Westminster Engagement Photos // Cathryn and Robert

Winter and spring are often chalk full of engagement sessions for us, and we've been riding the dizzying high we've gotten as we jump from one to the next!  It's an exciting whirlwind for us, and a huge moment for our couples as they plan their weddings whether their wedding is quickly approaching, or over a year away!  New Years Eve may seem like a long way off to some, but for Cathryn and Robert, who are hosting their Brix and Mortar wedding that day, we're sure it feels like it can't come fast enough!  Hosting an urban wedding at one of the most unique and romantic wedding venues in downtown Vancouver, an urban engagement session seemed very fitting for the theme! What a better place to do it than right in Cathryn and Robert's hood in New Westminster!

We met up with C + R on a sunny saturday evening, with clear blue skies and golden sunlight and they took us on a tour as we snapped pictures! We strolled through the brick alleyways, counted all the new and trendy cafes, and explored the boardwalk near the River Market for sunset.

Foggy, Rainy, Puppy-y Engagement Photos at Mount Douglas // Melanie and Matt

With Melanie and Matt's December wedding fast approaching, we were so happy to hear they had a bit of time to take for themselves to visit friends in Victoria!  What a perfect opportunity for us to do some engagement photos with them, and meet their sweet puppy, Nova.  Having photographed at Mount Doug in the summer, we thought it would a great place to go with Melanie and Matt. We daydreamed about sunkissed autumn leaves trees at the base of the mountain, and miles and miles of stunning views at the top, that they could experience as out-of-towners.  Well, everything works in theory! Ha ha ha! The fog and mist rolled in creating a very dramatic atmosphere around the whole mountain, which was pretty amazing to take in. We were pretty excited for the images it would create.  The rain followed shortly after; starting up the second we took the lens caps off our cameras.  Being outdoor wedding photographers on Vancouver Island's wet coast, we've gotten comfortable working in all types of weather, but we were so glad to see how easily and enthusiastically Matt and Melanie embraced the rain and fog!  They were all laughs and giggles as their puppy dashed through puddles, and as their clothes became drenched in rain drops.  Even with the dense fog at the top of the mountain, we were still able to take in some spectacular views as tree tops and hills jutted out here and there through the mist. It created an isolated feeling, blanket-like atmosphere: perfect for enjoying some cuddles under their umbrella together!

Thanks Melanie and Matt for dancing and skipping in the rain with us, and bringing silly sweet Nova along for us to meet.  We're excited for the wedding!

Reykjavik Elopement in Iceland // Farrah and Lance

We met Farrah and Lance through our friend Emma of Emma McCormmick Creative, and were so excited when they told us that they wanted to elope in Iceland and have us there to take the photos!  Like all of our couples, Farrah and Lance had their own unique way of doing their elopement, and we loved photographing the whole experience.  Farrah and Lance had a not-so-secret elopement, and even had a handful of family members and friends along to share in the day.  A mini wedding! We  love it!  

The day started out dark, with rain clouds looming over Reykjavik and as far as we could see: we assumed that our lucky weather streak had run out.  Our only option for the day was to follow the road in any direction that might lead us towards any sort of light. What a great decision that ended up being!

Black lava rocks, topped with bright green moss is what covers most of the Reykjanes Peninsula where we decided to head.  At Blue Lagoon, the vibrantly blue pools of water cut a contrasting path through the green and black blanket. They're made all the more vivid by their stark white silica borders.  For Farrah and Lance's first look, it made for a very surreal setting, even as rain threatened to pour on them.  From there we headed east, where we were treated to black sand beaches; their grassy dunes stretching for thousands of acres. Here we found an absolute absence of people, and warm sunlight bursting through dense fog, creating an otherworldly and romantic atmosphere.  

Farrah and Lance had saved their vows just for Iceland, and they were hoping to be able to exchange them at a waterfall at some point through the day.  As the day wound down and the sun began to set, we made our way further east to Seljalandsfoss, stopping along the way to visit with some Icelandic horses, and trying to coax them into cuddles with the promise of apples. We made it to Seljalandsfoss just in time for a glorious sunset, which couldn't have been more perfect for Farrah and Lance's romantic vow exchange.

Thank you Farrah and Lance! We had such a great day with you and your squad, chasing the light, fishing for horses, and walkie-talkie-ing like truckers between our vehicles!  Congratulations to you both, we hope these memories last forever!

Cheakamus Centre Wedding in Squamish // Kristina and Dan

You probably recognize Kristina and Dan from their Golden Ears Park engagement photos in September! Well, last month we travelled to Squamish from Vancouver Island to photograph their amazing rainforest wedding at Cheakamus Centre. This was the first wedding we photographed at Cheakamus Centre since our own wedding, and we were so excited that it would be Kristina and Dan's wedding! A super adventurous couple in a rainforest surrounded by mountains?!?! Sign us up: it's obviously going to be an epic day!

We kicked things off with a sweet first look at Cheakamus Centre, on gorgeous blue-green duck pond, with Dan and Kristina's bridal party peeking from a far.  Their outdoor ceremony was tucked in an intimate forest grove surrounded by moss, towering trees, and turning leaves.

With their rings exchanged, and vows proclaimed, Kristina and Dan, their friends and family partied the night away with silly reception games, memorable speeches, photobooth antics, and dancefloor shindigging.

East Sooke Park Engagement Photography // Ariel and Mike

Most of you know how much we've loved our little life in Sooke, since moving last year.  We love exploring the trails, the water, and getting to know the people in our new community, and playing tour guide for our friends and family when they visit.  We get super excited to meet people who are just visiting Sooke to explore, especially when Sooke was their main destination (not just a side trip they took while in beautiful Victoria :p).  Ariel and Mike are two of those people, coming all the way from Ontario to take in the glory of Sooke's coast line, wildlife, and forest.

Being recently engaged, we loved how they decided to do their engagement photos here, while they were on holiday!  How special is that!?! As you know, Sayde is from Ontario herself, and as you can probably imagine, when Ontarians meet on the west coast or anywhere in travel, there is a LOT of chatter to behold.  And chatter away we did.  It was great to spend two awesome hours chatting, photographing and exploring the trails (and going off trail into the ocean of ferns), beach, and islet at Iron Mine Bay in East Sooke.

Golden Ears Park Engagement Photos // Kristina and Dan

How was everyone’s Labour Day Weekend?  We spent the weekend chugging full steam ahead, photographing a couple events on Vancouver Island, and a couple events around Victoria! One of those events was an awesome evening spent with Kristina and Dan, hiking around Golden Ears Park to check out a waterfall, and do some engagement photos!

We were a little worried that photographing on a long weekend, in 33 degree weather might be a bit of a deal breaker for a great engagement session.  But, not the heat, nor the crowds stopped these two and their pooch, Max, from having an awesome time exploring the dusty trails and getting their feet wet in the river!  We were blown away by how cool and laid back they were the whole afternoon, and had such a great time chatting with them about their upcoming wedding at Cheakamus Centre, their Hawaiian honeymoon, and their story and life together!

Thanks Kristina and Dan for being such troopers on that balmy afternoon, we can’t wait for the wedding!

Hume Hotel Wedding in Nelson - Kristin and Ian

From the minute we met Kristin and Ian, they treated us like family. They treat everyone like they've known them their whole lives.  They are so welcoming and easy to get to know, hilarious, and open. They radiated love and support for each other, so much so, that when we first met them, we just assumed they were already married - they weren't even engaged by then, and hadn't been dating all that long!  It was so refreshing and inspiring, we felt so honoured to be asked to be the ones to photograph their wedding.

It was so great to see them again in August when we travelled to Nelson to photograph their wedding.  It was laughs galore with these two!  We could hear the laughter booming down the hallways as we first arrived at the Hume hotel for bride and groom prep photos, and we're sure it rumbled into the night long after we left.

We loved capturing Kristin and Ian's wedding day, which was done totally their way with the help of the gang at Nelson's Florist. The whole event was embellished with bright purple, and accented with superhero motifs, even the cake. How fun!

Overbury Resort Wedding on Thetis Island - Angela and Anuj

We met Angela and Anuj at the wedding of Lindsay and Darren last year.  We got talking about them and their future wedding at Overbury Resort on Thetis Island, and really hit it off.  We were looking forward to sitting down to talk more, two-on-two.  We soon found out it would be a three-on-two meeting, as Ang and Anuj were expecting their baby girl to arrive a few months before the wedding celebration.  We could hardly wait for July to come so that we could travel from Victoria to Thetis Island to celebrate such a momentous time - the arrival of beautiful Ava, and Ang and Anuj's wedding.

When we arrived on the day of their wedding we were greeted by warm weather, a shining sun, lots of Ang and Anuj's closest friends and family - many coming from far and wide to celebrate. The whole day felt like being at a glamourous family reunion, with everyone playing games together, and cooing over babies, at a venue that felt so homey, welcoming and remote.  Part way through the evening, Ange took off her white gown and donned a stunning magenta saree to pay homage to Anuj's Indian heritage.  What a stunning woman! 

Congratulations Angela and Anuj.  Thank you for having us there to be part of your day. Capturing the moments between you, your sweet girl, your family, and friends was such a delight for us! We hope you love the photos.

Lighthouse Park Engagement - Katrina and Brian

We met with Katrina and Brian while ago to talk about their Camp Fircom wedding, which they were planning no short notice. Four months of planning to be exact.  We learned a lot about them, from when they first met in Phoenix, all the way to their move to Vancouver.  Above all we learned that Katrina and Brian are an adventurous couple: they hike, they camp, they've climbed, you name it!  It only made sense to do a bit of hiking during their engagement session.  They told us about a hike they enjoy around Light House Park, and we thought it would be perfect to go and walk it with them.

As we made our way to the cliffs, waves crashed on the rocks, clouds danced in the sky and sun began its slow dip behind the mountains.  We clicked away with our cameras as Katrina and Brian explored around many of the embankments, in the hunt for the perfect view.

Capilano Suspension Bridge Engagement Session - Sandy and Jeff

Back in March we announced the launch of our new website, and wanted to celebrate by giving away a very special photo session at Capilano Suspension Bridge.  Sandy and Jeff were easily our most enthusiastic couple, entering the contest the most of anyone.  It paid off, 'cause it was their names we pulled out of the box at the end of the draw.  We couldn't wait to meet them!  

What a pleasure working with Sandy and Jeff, and getting to know them.  If there was an award for most laid back and patient couple, they'd win it for sure!  With ever-present smiles on their faces, they waded with us through crowds of people, precariously perching on swinging bridges, and swaying walk-ways, waiting for the perfect time for us to capture the moments that happened between them.  

We had lots of fun swinging from the treetops with you, Sandy and Jeff.  We hope you got your land legs back, and that you love the photos!

Destination Wedding in Costa Rica - Maryflor and Kyle

It feels like just yesterday that I photographed Kyle and Mary’s ridiculously fun surprise proposal/engagement session in the winter in Calgary!  Time flies though, and before I knew it I found myself on a plane, en route to Malpais, Costa Rica, to shoot their destination wedding.  I can’t thank them enough for bringing me along to share this experience, as I had an absolute blast.  The location was amazing, the day was amazing, everyone had so much fun and I think everything went just pretty much exactly as it should have.   Follow along and enjoy the beautiful views, the smiling faces, and the general good times had by all.  I got a crazy sunburn and my shoulders STILL are itchy over a month after getting back, but it was definitely worth it, without a doubt!  After 12 years together, congratulations to them both for finally tying the knot!
